Fashion designer Adarsh Makharia talks about his latest bridal collection, his celebrity connections, and more. While the designer hopes to expand his brand to other locations in India, he has a connection with Delhi.Indian spring-summer is the best time to flaunt soothing shades of pastels and delicate ensembles made of diaphanous tissue, kora, and organza fabrics. For Kolkata-based designer Adarsh Makharia, who recently opened a sprawling 3000 sq ft store in the posh Ambawatta Complex in Mehrauli, the reason to set base in the fashion capital is to offer a fresh take on sophistication for summer brides.

Makharia, who specializes in using Indian arts and crafts, used techniques such as applique and traditional craftsmanship like aari-taari, zari, and knotwork in his latest line of wedding attire. Speaking about his journey from Kolkata to Delhi, he shares: “The year 2013 was the breakthrough year; since then we never looked back. Building a repertoire of clientele transcending from Bollywood into the international circuit, we believe that everyone is special. Our clients have helped us shape into a known brand with time. We have been collaborating with many famous personalities like Gauri Khan, Parineeti Chopra, Shraddha Kapoor, and Hina Khan, to name a few, and will continue to do so in the coming years. Also with the rise in sustainable fashion, we want to focus on utilising the residual by collaborating with artisans and clientele to bring the concept of complete sustainability into life.”His seven-year-old brand and its SS20 line received a warm welcome from Delhi socialites, who couldn’t stop raving about his opulent garments in vivid colours like sepia rose, frost blue, taupe lemon, scarlet, and amber. 

“The line is inspired by the art of gold silk weaving of the orient. Intricate 3D patterns are woven with gold and multi-coloured threads to create heirloom pieces,” Makharia explains about his collection, adding, “My target audience is a woman who values her Indian roots and cherishes her heritage. The collection starts at Rs 35,000 onwards and is available from our flagship stores and our partnered multi-designer stores like Aza and Carma.”While the designer hopes to expand his brand to other locations in India, he has a connection with Delhi. “I had once visited Mehrauli for a solo show and fell in love with the ambience of the place. There was no plan to open a store there, but when the opportunity arose, I didn’t let it go. I took it up as a challenge to take the label further. I feel it is healthy that there are other designer stores around; this enables us to show to the clientele what makes us unique,” he sums up.

IIT Madras has released the SDK for its open source Shakti processor. Like China and those in the European Union, India is also displaying interest in designing its own processors instead of depending on those designed in the US. It has been just a few days since the Shakti processor has been announced. The project funded by the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is now ready for app development. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has released the SDK for its open-source Shakti processor that’s based on RISC-V instruction set architecture. IIT Madras also revealed that the development board will release in the near future as well.Work on the Shakti processor began in 2016 by the RISE Group at IIT Madras and they aim to release up to six classes of processors that will be targeted at different markets.

RISE promises that these processors would be able to compete with commercial chipsets in terms of area, performance and power consumption.Like China and those in the European Union, India is also displaying interest in designing its own processors instead of depending on those designed in the US. By releasing the Shakti SDK, developers can start building apps for it even before it is made commercially available.As per a report by Tom’s Hardware, the various processor classes are as follows:E Class: This is a 3-stage in order that’s targeted at embedded devices such as IoT, robotics, motor controls and the like.C Class: It is a 32-bit 5 stage in-order microcontroller-class of processors supporting 0.2-1 GHz clock speeds that are aimed at midrange application workloads and has a very low power profile. There’s also support for optional memory protection.I Class: It is a 64-bit out of order processors that support clock speeds ranging from 1.5-2.5GHz.

It also supports multi-threading and targets mobile, storage and network apps.M Class: It supports multi-core processors up to eight CPU cores which can also include I and C class cores.S Class: This is aimed at the workstation and server-type workloads and it is an enhanced version of the I Class processor that features multi-threading support.H Class: This is primarily for high-performance and analytical workloads. The main feature here includes high-single thread performance, optional L4 cache and Gen-Z fabric and storage class memory.It is also reported that the RISE Group is also working on two experimental classes of processors. The report states, “The first is the T class, which should support object-level security and coarse grain tags for micro-VM-like functionality to mitigate software attacks like buffer-overflow. The second is the F class, which can be thought of as an upgrade over the T class with additional support for redundant compute blocks and bus fabrics, ECC memory and functionality to detect permanent faults.”

The poultry business has been severely hit by the recent move of the government.It was a double trouble situation at Ghazipur Mandi in East Delhi on Friday, which is home to one of Asia’s largest livestock market. Completely marred by the government’s move of scrapping the old currency, the market, which was earlier hit by the supposedly avian bird flu scare, has now been doomed. While the commission agents of fish, poultry, and egg market were seen struggling in storing the already transported live food stock with no suppliers and beneficiaries coming forward to buy it, the labourers were seen rendered jobless and cashless with the business hitting an all time low over the last 20 years.

The crippling effect of the currency demonetisation not only broke the back of the livestock food market, but has left many labourers jobless. The business saw a dip of 80 per cent in the last few days leaving thousands of wholesale traders and suppliers sleepless overnight.“The poultry business has been severely hit by the recent move of the government. There are only few takers now. Usually, where the daily average of the inflow of trucks carrying live stock used to be around 120-140 trucks a day, on Friday, we managed to get about 70-80 trucks only. Business has dipped invariably with the sale touching an all time low,” pointed Zameel Ahmed, a wholesale poultry agent.  He further added, “The situation is grim as chicken livestock is not being sold and this is adversely affecting the hen. Once they are out of the poultry farms, on a daily basis they tend to reduce around 100 grams of weight. Now, with this move of the government, the stock is being piled-up with no takers.”

If the poultry and chicken commission dealers and agents are to be believed, the livestock is bought by wholesalers from poultry farms from neighbouring states like Haryana and Punjab.The scene at the fish market was no different from the poultry and chicken market. The commission agents at the market allege that there has been a considerable dip in business leaving people in a lurch.With no cash liquidity in the market, Aalam, another commission agent of the fish market, believes that the market will take many months to get back to its usual business. “Transport has been hit. There is an all time decrease in the sale and no money in hand to give to the labourers. It is probably one of the worst times for us.” According to a functionary officer, the revenue has seen a new low in the past many years. “With most of the transactions being made by cash, the suppliers and wholesale dealers are hit by this move.”                    

People watch TV programes in Karachi.A Pakistani court has allowed private television channels having valid licences to show Indian films as per their terms of agreement with the countrys regulatory authority.Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Monday granted the permission to private television channels in the light of the report put by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) before the court.Shah passed the interim order on a petition filed by Leo Communication, challenging ban on airing Indian content on cable television network.

The report stated that television channels should be allowed to run Indian films as per clause 7.2 (ii) of License Establish & Operate Satellite TV Broadcast Channel Station.Advocate Taffazul Rizvi, counsel for petitioner, argued in the court that the channels should also be allowed to broadcast Indian plays as they also fall within the definition of entertainment under the licence agreement with the PEMRA.PEMRA law officer contested the argument seeking time to establish that the entertainment does not include Indian plays.He said the channels were allowed to run Indian films as per terms of their licence agreements with PEMRA.PEMRA in its October 2016 order had banned Pakistani private channels being operated through cable network from airing the Indian content.The petition filed said the order was a violation of PEMRA rules and the Constitution.The petitioner said in 2010 he had been granted a 15-year licence by PEMRA to operate a cable channel - Filmazia -  and under the licence it was allowed to broadcast 10 per cent of foreign content including Indian."

The channel because of running foreign (Indian) content became very popular and received highest viewership ratings across the country," he said.It said the PEMRA without citing any legal reason in October issued a circular abruptly banning all Indian content on cable channels in Pakistan."The government is indulging in selective patriotism as Indian movies are allowed to be exhibited in cinemas all over the country showing its double standards," he alleged.Earlier, Justice Shah had observed that when Indian movies are being screened in cinemas in the country what justification the government/PEMRA has to ban them on TV.The court adjourned the further hearing till March 2.
